Golden Days' festivals
Each year Golden Days presents an historical festival. The
festival's purpose is to enlighten, entertain and engage the
residents of Copenhagen - and everyone else - in the city's
history. At every festival, cultural institutions across the city
participate in conveying a specific theme to a diverse audience
across various genres and media. The festival's profile ranges from
popular to high culture, and the ambition is to offer sophisticated
and innovative communication about the city's history to
everyone.
Periods in the history of Copenhagen
Golden Days' historical festivals describe different time periods
in the city's history: The period between 1800 and 1850 was the
focus of the first four festivals, which helped make the Danish
population aware of the Danish Golden Age as an historical period.
In 2002 the festival dealt with the period from 1870 to 1890 - The
Modern Breakthrough - and in 2004 the focus was on Copenhagen in
the 1890s. In 2006 the festival went back to Christian IV's
Copenhagen. In 2008 the theme was "Copenhagen during the inter-war
period - Functionalism, Free-thinking and Fascism", and in
September 2009 the festival placed, for the first time, a
historical perspective on a theme with the festival "Body
Performance - World Champions, Wasp-like Waists and Viagra."
An umbrella for history
The festival is an umbrella organization for a wide range of
museums, theatres, ensembles and other cultural organizations. Each
year an artistic program of several weeks in length is put
together. The program expresses the year's theme through
exhibitions, concerts, debates and other activities. To ensure that
the themes of the festival obtain a significant 'afterlife' well
beyond the festival's actual period, the festival also publishes
books, educational material and much more.
The Golden Days' historic festival receives grants from the
Copenhagen Municipality and the Ministry of Culture. In addition,
the festival is funded by private sponsors.
Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II is patron of the historic
festival.
